🛑 The dictatorship that marked Nadia’s life
Did you know that Nadia Comaneci lived under a government that controlled even what she could say or where she could travel? Today you’ll learn what a dictatorship is, how it worked in Romania, and how it directly impacted Nadia’s life.
📚 What is a dictatorship?
A dictatorship is a form of government in which a single person or a very small group has all the power.
There are no free elections or citizen participation.
Rights such as freedom of speech are limited or eliminated.
Those who oppose it can be persecuted, imprisoned or even killed.
In this type of government, the dictator makes all the decisions and controls the media, the laws and sometimes even the culture of the country.
🧠 How does a dictatorship work?
Dictators use various methods to stay in power:
🔺 Propaganda:
The government controls information.
False or exaggerated messages are spread to manipulate the people.
🔒 Censorship:
It is forbidden to say or publish ideas contrary to the regime.
It also affects media, music, books or movies.
👮 Repression:
Use of violence, fear and surveillance.
Dissident people may end up in prison or in exile.
💥 Impact of a dictatorship on society
A dictatorship affects everyone’s life. Some of its most serious effects:
🚫 Lack of freedoms: you cannot express yourself or choose your rulers.
❌ Human rights violations: torture, unjust imprisonment and assassinations.
💸 Inequality and poverty: power and money are concentrated in few hands.
🏛️ Nicolae Ceaușescu: Romania’s dictator
He ruled from 1965 to 1989.
He created a cult of personality, placing himself and his wife as almost sacred figures.
He controlled the lives of citizens with censorship, surveillance and repression.
📉 Under his regime:
Food and medicine were in short supply.
People lived in fear.
The government had a large foreign debt due to wrong economic decisions.
🤸♀️ Nadia Comaneci’s life under dictatorship
Although she was a world star, Nadia was not free:
She was constantly watched by the government.
Her success was used as a propaganda tool.
She could not decide which competitions to go to or what interviews to give.
The state kept her earnings.
🛫 In 1989, at the age of only 28, Nadia fled Romania to seek freedom. That same year, Ceaușescu’s dictatorship fell after a popular revolution.
🌟 Since then, Nadia became a voice for human rights. She founded the Nadia Comaneci Foundation, to support children and young people in Romania.
🤯 Did you know…?
- On the run, Nadia crossed the border on foot during the night.
- The regime feared her influence so much that they even forbade her to speak to foreign journalists.
- Despite being a national heroine, she lived under surveillance and without autonomy.

- What risks did Nadia take in fleeing her country?
- Does it seem fair to you that someone can’t use their own money or decide about their life?
- How does a person’s life change when they live in freedom?
