Juan José Arévalo
(1904-1990) Prominent Guatemalan intellectual, educator and politician, known for being the first democratically elected president of Guatemala after the 1944 Revolution. His government, which lasted from 1945 to 1951, marked the beginning of a period known as the “Democratic Spring” in the country, during which profound reforms were implemented in areas such as education, health and labour rights. Arévalo promoted an ideology of “spiritual socialism,” focused on social welfare and justice, and faced significant challenges in his struggle to establish a solid and sustainable democracy in Guatemala.
