Christopher Columbus
(1451-1506) A Genoese navigator in the service of Spain, he is best known for his 1492 voyage that led to the discovery of America. Pursuing a route to Asia, Columbus landed in what is now known as the Americas, beginning a new chapter in world history. While his arrival marked the beginning of European colonization of the Americas and an unprecedented cultural exchange, it also triggered complex and negative consequences for indigenous populations, including exploitation and suffering. Their legacy is controversial, with some celebrating their explorations as a historical milestone and others criticizing the devastating effects they had on native civilizations.
